2007.12.19

our second annual holiday party.

last year my best girlie's and i started a tradition.  we threw a kickass holiday party.  it wasn't for work, it wasn't for charity, it was just for fun.  so, it's that time again.  after all the planning, it will finally be time to celebrate on friday night.  that's right boys and girls, it's time to let the good times roll.

i'm making these bacon things for the party.  they rocked!  i think i'm making some for the party and then some for our christmas weekend with matt's family.  i'm be the superstar because people will love my tasty little treats or they will hate me because i helped them gain 10 pounds in just minutes.  everyone is supposed to bring a snack to share, but we don't really rely on that.  last year we brought the munchies and they were a total hit.  i mean, who doesn't love food when they're bombed?  jen is making a monster cheeseball and the other jenn is making veggie pizza.  god, i'm hungry while i type this.  okay, enough about the food.  but hey, if you're planning on attending, bring something good would ya?  :)

i have friday off.  in the afternoon we're getting together and going to hang lights and get the basement of the muni looking all fabulous (if that is even possible).  i've heard rumors that there is no heat down there right now so i'm just going to have to make sure there is some kickin' tunes we can dance to and heat the place up!  hahaha!  boy, i hope i get some good pictures to share!

pure joy.

this afternoon i talked to matt on the phone while i was at work.  he told me a package had arrived in the mail.  he asked what it was.  i knew.  i knew it was my secret santa.  i asked him who it was from and he confirmed it, 'it's from your secret santa'.  heaven to my ears.  so, the rest of the afternoon i had to work knowing that my special little package was at home waiting for me.  the suspense nearly killed me.

when i got home, i immediately went to the package on the counter.  i looked at the box and a tiny little thought entered my head.  i KNOW this handwriting on the address label.  so, i took a picture of the package (see below).  then, i opened the package and found the gift.  again, i KNEW the handwriting on the card.  so, i took a picture of the gift (see below).  next, i opened the card...and confirmed exactly what i was thinking - kim was my secret santa!  i got a good giggle out of that one!  so funny that in this blogger world, my secret santa ended up being one of my best friends ever.  and no kim, i was not disappointed AT ALL.  i then opened the gift and found what i can only explain as PURE JOY inside.  it was the new camera strap i wanted!  oh, and i took a couple pictures for you all to see (see below).

The_package_3Pure_joy_3 Lovin_the_dots_2 The_gift_2

kim, you TOTALLY made my day.  what a perfect gift!  thank you SO much!  this blogger santa was a great idea that jess came up with.  oh, and i'm sorry, i'll be honest...my package went out monday!  i had a sick kiddo and didn't get to the ups drop off on friday!  sorry!  i can't wait until my person gets their gift though!  :)

sneak peek.

here are a few pictures that don't really give you a feel for the 'real' new color of the living room, but they were some of my favorites from the weekend.  more of an update soon.  it's been a very busy weekend!

i have some questions.

this whole post started out about potty training.  then i kept wondering about other things and well, it's turned into a bunch of questions.  i am looking for your feedback.

potty training.  i know that every kid is different.  my mom always tells me when me and my brother were trained, but in my opinion it is harder to compare than that.  sure, i wish tucker was trained and wasn't in diapers.  then i'd have more money to pay off student loans.  but, the reality is i'm nervous and i don't think he is quite ready yet.  we have all the supplies to start, but i'm waiting for a sign.  what kind of sign?  like for him to walk in the bathroom, pull down his pants and take care of business.  hmm.  i just don't think that's going to happen though.  so, after the holidays (meaning new years, not easter), we're going to give it a go.  okay, i have to really go over this with matt, but i think it's time we push it a little and see what happens.  he does know when he goes poop and will tell us (sometimes), however there are times he says he has gone and he has only farted (nice).  he hasn't been big into stripping off his own clothes, but he will try to help take his pants down sometimes when i go to change him.  anyways, here is my question for all the moms out there.  when did your child start and how long did it take to get them trained?  are there any games or incentives that you used in the process?  how strict were you when you started and during the entire process?

bedtimes.  i wish tucker had more of a bedtime ritual.  this is my fault mostly.  it also is difficult to get him to sleep only to have him wake up a few hours later so i usually don't mind if he goes to bed later because then maybe he'll be there until we're in bed.  eh, just writing that makes me exhausted.  tucker is 21 months.  he goes to sleep anywhere between 8 and 1030 some nights.  it is insane.  he gets up in the morning after i go to work usually and only takes one afternoon nap for about an hour or so.  what gives?  anyways, i'm wondering what your kids bedtime ritual's are and what time they go to bed.

dry skin.  tucker has had dry skin on his scalp since he was a few months old.  i have tried EVERYTHING.  cradle cap stuff, oils, lotions...and the lastest is dandruff shampoo.  his doctor told me to try that.  it is a tricky thing to use dandruff shampoo without getting it in his eyes but i've been successful so far.  it seems to be working a bit.  i'm wondering if anyone out there has had a similar issue.  if so, can you tell me what helped you?  i've heard that some kids have this for years.  yikes.  also, while i'm asking about dry skin, what is your favorite type of baby/kids lotion?

snacks.  i feel like i'm in a rut with tucker and his snacks.  i usually have the same things on hand and want to find more to offer him.  what are some of your kids (toddlers) favorite snacks?  i've got the crackers, fruit bars, cereal, raisins, string cheese thing down, but give me some new ideas!  it seems silly to ask, but really, i want to know.

family activities.  with winter upon us, i'm looking for new activities that can keep us busy inside the house.  i'm sick of doing the same old thing day after day.  i've been looking at other blogs at neat things moms do with their kids and have been making a list.  we love being outside, but usually it is below freezing here so i'd prefer to stay warm!  what are some of your favorite family activities?

well, i think that's it for now.  i hope to hear from all of you!

2007.12.13

trumped by a double ear infection.

so, pink eye is out...sort of.  tucker has a cold.  the cold is in his eyes but the goobers are caused by the bacterial part of the cold, not the viral part.  okay, i think you understand what i'm saying and if not, just pretend like you do.  i'm super glad i brought him in because he also has a double ear infection.  both ears were red and swollen.  super.  so, he has amoxicillin for that and eye drops for the goobers.  he hasn't had a fever or anything, so i'm praying that this is the worst of it and we're on the upswing from here.

i am freakin' exhausted.  however, i'm the only one in my house that is not sleeping right now (and it's 645).  so unfair.  my back is killing me and has been all week.  i complained to matt but that doesn't go very far, so i'm going to complain to anyone reading.  i don't know if it is my bed or the 23 pounder i lug around half the time.  i'm hoping that this weekend i can just relax.  oh yeah, that's right.  i have cookies to make and a living room to paint.  hahahahaaa ahah ahhh crap.

the best part of my night so far?  i made these.  i felt like gaining ten pounds in five minutes, so i went ahead and made them.  no, i wanted to see if i liked them (who doesn't love anything with bacon?) and if so, i might bring them to our holiday party next friday.  mmmm.  let me tell you, they are DELISH.

i'm plugging away on the christmas cards.  i hope to get them out by tomorrow.  thank goodness.  i can't wait until that is off my plate.  i still need addresses though (kim...h...are you reading?).

okay, so i really had some thoughts for thursday, but i think i'll get all my random thoughts out tomorrow.  i'm really hoping to get good feedback from the moms out there!  seriously, it is kind of a hodgepodge of things from potty training to dry skin to snacks to bedtimes.  i'm just curious about what others got goin' on.  :)

2007.12.12

completely random.

i'm going to put this whole post in bullet points because otherwise it will make no sense.  i'm going to be all over the place here.

  • first of all, melinda is having a coach purse give-away.  hell yeah!  go ahead and throw your name in the hat if you think you're lucky.
  • Melinda Zook
  • tomorrow i will be taking tucker to the doctor.  last night he started getting big eye boogers and now his eye is getting redder (is that a word?).  so, before he is miserable, i'm taking him in to see if it is pink eye and get him something to help clear it up.  i'll be spending the rest of the day disinfecting the house.  super.
  • tonight i packaged up my blogger secret santa gift.  jess started this neat idea.  i'm excited to mail it out and also excited to get mine in the mail!  :)  i'll post when the eagle has landed.  geesh, i sure hope whoever has me has the password to my blog right now.  eeeek!
  • it seems like forever ago, but i actually won a prize on nablopomo!  yeah, crazy!  my prize was a $25 gift card to itunes from jaemie.  thanks so much!
  • the tree is up, half my presents are wrapped, and the cookies are one of this week's projects.  i probably won't get to them until the weekend.  i'm excited to make them though.  i'll tell you what i'm making when i get to that point.
  • i bought paint for our living room.  i went with...drumroll please...burgundy red!  yeah, it's going to be a change, but i'm excited about it.  matt even seemed to like it.  all the other colors i looked at looked like 'poop' to him.  nice.
  • one of our chairs we got has a loud 'creek' to it, so we'll be exchanging it.  i'm glad they have a 90 day satisfaction guarantee.  i promise, pictures are coming of the furniture and the tree and all that, but i just have not had time to download the dang things.
  • i have no time.  i have little patience.
  • i need a maid or a bulldozer for this place.
  • i have secured a sitter for the night of our holiday party.  i can't wait!
  • i'm sure there was a heck of a lot more i was going to put in this post, but i'm done.  i've got dishes to put away, laundry to be done, presents to wrap, a shower to take, and sleep to catch up on.

thoughts for thursday - all the mom's reading this better be ready.  this is one i'll need your input on!

2007.12.11

numb.

this morning i had an issue with a tooth.  a painful issue.  i had never felt that kind of pain before.  let me tell you, it was delightful.  i have a dentist appointment tomorrow, but i ended up calling and having another one made for this afternoon.  lucky me - the dentist twice in two days.

so, this afternoon, i went down and they fixed a cavity.  i had to get a double shot of novocain during my visit.  holy freaking crap.  it's been a few hours and i am still numb.  numb from the top of my head to my neck.  i hate that!  i feel like the right side of my face is hanging down to my knees.  ick.  oh, and the feeling i had this morning is gone, but i'm not sure if it is because they actually fixed the problem or if it is because they pumped so much novocain into me that i won't feel a thing for the next 12 hours.  nice.  i was looking forward to eating making christmas cookies tonight too.  :)

what is the worse part about the dentist?  i would have to say it is smelling the burnt tooth smell when they are drilling on your cavity.  i can't stand that!  i cringe when that tool comes off the tray.  then the way it grinds on your tooth, oh, horrible!

moral of this post: floss your teeth three times a day.  i know the dentist says once, but just to be safe, i'd add a time or two.  this cavity repair stuff is for the birds.

2007.12.09

is the weekend already over?

i had a great weekend.  i'm pretty sure i lost about half my readers on saturday when i slapped the password on, but oh well.  i just feel better having that on there right now.  i'm sure i'll get sick of entering it myself and take it off, but for now, it stays.  i hope the three of you that are left reading will still give me some comment love.  sorry, i'm a beggar.  :)

on friday night we went to bed early.  it felt good to sleep.  i love me some sleep!

on saturday, tucker and i were busy.  first we went to the grocery store.  after we were done there, we went to my gram's as my mom was up for a bit.  we visited there for a while, then went home and dropped off the groceries.  then, we went over to visit kim and max.  max is going to be a ladies man!  he's got beautiful eyes and such a cute little grin!  he could give a lady baby fever in no time flat!  :)  after our visit, we went home and tucker went down for his nap.  while he napped, i cleaned the house at the speed of light in order to get ready for our game night.  oh, during all this matt had went to his parents to help is dad work on his mom's car.  after we had dinner tucker went to stay at nana and papa's house while we had a night with friends.  we had a GREAT time!  we played cranium, apples to apples, and i love the 80's.  we had about a dozen people at the house - just like the good ol' days!

this morning we got up early considering how late we were up.  no hangover here people - thankyouverymuch.  we went and picked up tucker and headed to duluth to finish our christmas shopping.  grandma cheryl and grandpa jim watched tucker while we shopped.  that was great!  we got so much done in such a little amount of time.  the crowds were not too bad.  too bad these people wouldn't all stay off the roads.  that's the worse part is dealing with retards in the parking lots and on the roads.  eh, anyways...it was a successful trip.  tucker had a great time too!  thanks mom!  oh, and how could i forget...we ate lunch at dairy queen.  mmmm, yum.

tonight i started addressing my christmas cards.  i'll finish them early this week hopefully.  the tree will go up tomorrow night.  tucker also will be getting another haircut tomorrow night.  lord, this kid has some hair going on.  i'll post pictures of his new 'do this week, maybe with my tucker update.  i'm such a slacker with updating you on that little rascal!

well, hope you all had a great weekend.  we sure did, but it went by way too fast!

2007.12.08

you wanted answers.

here they are.  answers to all of your earth shatterin', dirt diggin', mind bogglin' questions.

from kim: when can we expect another kid?
well, i've thought about this a lot.  i will not be giving birth in 2008, however, i've always liked odd numbers so maybe our next child will make his/her debut in 2009.  matt has 49% say in this, i have 51% since i'm the one lugging the babe around for nine months.

from mary: what does the 'stickyfeathers' in your blog name mean?
i posted about it here.  i have thought about changing the name, but haven't come up with anything better yet, so it's staying as is for now.

from leah: which is your favorite picture that you've taken in 2007?
i have SO many favorite pictures all for different reasons.  let's go with these four:
Little_devilGrasshopper_prison Peoni Look_up

from kenneth:  do you still love me?  did you ever?  does my shift key work?
no, i never loved you because to be honest, you kind of creep me out.  um, i think i covered your question about the shift key in this post.

from kaseyif you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go visit?
seeing i don't travel much, i have a long list of places i want to visit.  they include: hawaii, alaska, us virgin islands, austraila, new zeland, belize, as well as traveling on both the east and west coasts.

from my mom:  what is your most memorable moment of your papa owen?
whisker rubs everytime we said goodbye when we were little.  i loved that.  i miss him.

from melindawhat actress/actor do you admire the most?  how old were you when you had your first french kiss?
hmmm.  i'm not sure if there is an actress/actor that i admire.  i mean, unless you think that admire means thinking they are hot.  in that case, i'd have to say i really like jake.  oooh yeah baby.  oh, and my first french kiss -  geesh.  i'd have to say i was in ninth grade i think.  thank god you didn't ask who it was with!

from amywhat's the craziest thing you've ever done?
well, the craziest thing i had ever planned to do was jump out of a perfectly good airplane in the fall of 2005.  then i found out i was pregnant and that ended those plans quick.  so, i'd have to say it had to have been the time that matt, me, my brother, and derek were driving around town on a winter night a few years ago (before i had a kid so i could act stupid).  we were in derek's s10 pickup, yes, all four of us were in the front of his pickup.  that's a tight fit.  anyways, i'd always begged derek to get a good run and jump the cul-de-sac on one of the streets in town.  well, that night, for whatever reason, derek listened to me.  we got about a block run going at about 45 mph and we nailed that cul-de-sac.  we all braced ourselves, i pushed myself into matt (as i was on his lap).  i remember looking out the window as we were in the air and all i could see was the beautiful night sky.  we were airbornne and it was awesome!  we landed with a thud and all of the salt and ice buildup that was on the s10 flew off upon impact with the ground.  we were all dying laughing when we landed and looked over and saw a guy we knew looking out his window watching this spectacle.  we rolled back to the point we had started and all bailed out of the vehicle.  i flopped myself in a snowbank and laughed so hard i cried.  maybe it wasn't the craziest thing ever, but it was so much fun.  we used to do a lot of this and i'm sure we could have got in some trouble for it.  maybe that was the rush of it.

from angieif your life had taken a completely different turn - no marriage, no kids, what would you have wanted to do? or be?
deep thinking here folks.  i wouldn't give up the way my life is for the world.  one thing i find intriguing that i would never explore now would be a traveling photojournalist.  i mean going all over the world, not just for the local paper.  that sounds interesting but now, having a family that is my number one priority.  having a career that would take me out of the home so much is something i am just not interested in whatsoever, but if things were different...

from jaimehow do you enhance your eyes in photoshop?
i wish i could take the credit for this, but i learned it from the pioneer woman.  since i'm a retard when it comes to photoshop, i followed her step-by-step instructions here.  sorry it took so long for me to get this to you!  good luck!

from denisehow did you meet your husband?
i met my husband when we were in junior high.  he lived in the country so i didn't really know him before all of my girlfriends are i started getting boy crazy.  a few of my friends were 'boyfriend/girlfriend' with him in junior high.  things changed when i was a sophomore in high school.  at a football scrimmage in cook (how fitting), he was checking me out.  to this day he still remembers what i was wearing.  dork.  a while after that, we started talking on the phone, hanging out 24/7, and were just always together.  that's lasted all these years...11 to be exact.  we are high school sweethearts.  :)

from melissa:  if you could punch one person, that you know personally, in the face - would whould it be?
i would punch monica right in the kisser.  not once, but twice.  :)

from christinawhere was i born?  where do you like to go camping?  what were the worst and best of your 8 jobs?  what college did you attend and why did you hate it?  nikon or canon?  what is your favorite lens?
i was born in minnesota.  one of my favorite places to go camp is the bemidji state park campground.  they have such a nice layout there.  the worst job i ever had was at the local gas station.  it just sucked.  the best job i ever had was working for the city as the ice rink attendant for open skating.  it was such a cake job.  take money for their ticket, let 'em skate, listen to music, talk to people, skate, and be the referee between all the little gremlins on the ice.  it was like eight hours a week - too bad i couldn't have made a living doing that.  i attended a private school that was kind of a joke.  we went through administration like they were dirty socks and the building and resources were crap.  i don't really want to say what school it was.  i feel bad saying i hated it because i do value the education i received (and i had small class sizes) but everything else sucked.  oh, and last but not least, i used to be a nikon lover, then i got my canon...love it!  i only have two lenses so my favorite would have to be my 50mm.

from zoe: boxers or briefs?
boxer briefs.  :)

from jess:  what did you get me for christmas?  what will your next child be named (boy or girl)?
you will have to wait to see what you got for christmas.  i'm not telling.  as far as what my next child will be named: girl/makayla lee & boy/no clue.  it was so hard to agree on tucker's name.  i had a long list that i loved, but matt wasn't sold on any of them.  mainly because his head was clouded with visions of a 'junior'.  that was not happening.

from reginawho is/are your favorite photographer(s)?
there are so many people that i have found online that i admire.  i really think i have too many to list, but a few of them are listed in my sidebar 'photography'.  check out their work, they rock!

from jane:  when you were pregnant, did you have a girls name picked out and if so, what was it?
matt and i had actually picked out the very same name - without even discussing it!  we had a baby book at home that someone had left in our vehicle (no idea who to this day).  i had brought it in and had looked at it (knowing we would be getting pregnant soon).  i loved the name makayla.  months later when we knew we were expecting, matt was looking at the book.  i came home and he said he had found a girls name he liked.  we flipped through and there it was, makayla.  he even liked the spelling that i did.  so, we knew we had a keeper.  i've always wanted to name my little girl after me and my dad (our middle names are lee) so there we had it: makayla lee.

2007.12.06

happy, happy, joy, joy!

the new furniture is here!  it looks so nice!  ahhhhh.  i am so happy!  thanks to corey and larry for helping matt get it in the house.  thank you to my mom for cleaning the floor under the old couch before i got off work.  thank you to tucker for not destroying it the first night.  :)  i promise to post pictures this weekend of the before and after.  i also plan to get paint this weekend for the living room - i'm thinking a cranberry color.  we also need to get some curtains for the living room and i'm not sure what color i'll get them in.  i'll have to think about it.

it has been freezing ass cold here lately.  when you have to plug your car in so it will start in the morning because it has spent the night in the below zero temperatures, it is not a good thing.  i'm pretty sure if my car could do anything it would be kicking my ass for not having a nice garage for it to sleep in.

tomorrow night we are going to get our tree out of the box and put it up.  i'm excited about that.  i was going to put all white lights on it, but then i changed my mind and am going to put all colored lights on it.  i'm going to put the other lights up around the house maybe.  again, i'll have to post pictures when i'm done.

on saturday i hope that tucker and i get to visit kim and max!  i'm very excited about seeing you both!

on sunday we plan on getting to duluth to get the last of our christmas gifts.  we only have three more people to buy for and we already know what we are going to get them so it shouldn't be too bad.  i'm also going to be picking up my holiday photocards that i ordered from wallyworld.  don't cringe.  it's just the way it is.  i ordered them online this week.  that was cheap and easy and it's done.  next year i'd like to do something a little more creative.  what do all you guys do for your cards?  do you make them?  buy them?  write a letter?  do a family photo?  give me the details.  i'm curious.

again, in case some of you were not aware of this, tomorrow is friday.
do you know the joy i feel deep in my soul because it will be friday tomorrow?
yeah, i bet you do.  :)
